A Day of Play and Planting for PHS Gardeners

8th grade physicists shared their work with PHS second graders. Students had a blast firing trebuchets and testing roller coaster models. Students were mesmerized as they observed each machine function. Young gardening enthusiasts also checked in on the impressive growth of the snow peas they had planted in March. They teamed up and planted cilantro, spinach and lettuce too!

A Lovely Spring Day Tending Our Deck Garden

PHS' second grade explored, observed and admired the wide variety of life that calls the deck garden home. Students were thrilled to discover a healthy number of worms living in planters and hiding under garden furniture. It is really great to see how much love students have for all creatures - no matter how big or exceptionally small. The amount of work that can be completed in a short lunch meeting is truly impressive. Six young people were able to prepare the planting beds by removing vegetables that had flowered and gone to seed and then tilling the soil. They finished up by welcoming spinach, kale and red chard to the garden. We all look forward to the day when we can enjoy feasting on the vegetables we grow.

A Wonderful Afternoon of Planting Veggies!

What a pleasure getting to play, explore and create in our PHS edible deck garden. Our second graders teamed up and revived and refreshed one of our three planters. They worked together joyously planting kale, spinach, arugula and chard. It was an amazing and productive lunchtime work session.

Tomato Season!

PHS gardeners were excited to start their tomato season by introducing six new varieties of plants. It is really exciting to see how our 2nd graders have grown in very real ways. They have taken to gardening routines, show that they have a heart connection to their edible deck garden, are excited about observing the ongoing changes that are part of tending crops, and love sharing time with one another and their middle school friends. 

Partnerships Happen In Our Garden!

It is pretty amazing how productive this tiny roof garden is. Each week we tend and harvest. There is enough food to provide ten families their dinner salad each night. This is after all of our farmers graze their roof garden. We really do enjoy nibbling on all the kale, chard, spinach, fennel, mint, lettuce, mint, sage, rosemary, tomatoes and catnip! Farming is a lot of fun!

Kale, Spinach and Parsley - Firing Up Our Grow Lights

PHS' 2nd grade worked hard planting kale, spinach and parsley. Students planted seeds and revived the growing trays in the 3rd floor deck garden. Students checked in on the many plants they have started over the last few weeks to find that each of their projects are vibrant and bursting with life. We all look forward to the joy of feasting on a delicious salad grown in and harvested from the much loved deck garden. 

How Does Your Garden Grow?

PHS' 2nd grade and middle school students teamed up to grow foods on their third floor deck. Garden club was excited to have PHS class of 2014's Katy come by and lead the day's projects. Our urban farmers explored the California natives that call the deck home, harvested tomatoes, and planted greens. It is inspiring to see what our energetic and enthusiastic PHS students can achieve in one short working lunch. 

Exploring, Playing and Planting in the Garden

Middle school gardeners welcomed PHS' second grade to the garden for explorations, play and planting. Second graders learned about the California natives like lupin, yerba buena, sticky monkey, ceanothus, coyote bush and California willow. They picked, played with and ate the many herbs that grow in the PHS deck garden. They also planted kale, red chard and lettuce. Students predict that they'll be eating these greens in a salad within six weeks. It was a great way to spend a Thursday lunch.

Welcome back. We are happy to let you know that we have kicked off the 7th year of the PHS deck garden. This week we mapped out our workdays and planted arugula, lettuce and kale. We are looking forward to lots of great projects and enjoying eating and sharing our crops. Thanks you.

Giving Love and Attention to Our Precious Garden!

We finally found time to tend our beloved garden. We did our chores. We removed vegetable that had gone to seed and replaced them with bok choy and tomatoes. We checked in on our worm-bin and we were glad to see that the worm-bin is thriving. Life should never be too busy to spend time out in the beauty of nature.
