Partnerships Happen In Our Garden!

It is pretty amazing how productive this tiny roof garden is. Each week we tend and harvest. There is enough food to provide ten families their dinner salad each night. This is after all of our farmers graze their roof garden. We really do enjoy nibbling on all the kale, chard, spinach, fennel, mint, lettuce, mint, sage, rosemary, tomatoes and catnip! Farming is a lot of fun!

Kale, Spinach and Parsley - Firing Up Our Grow Lights

PHS' 2nd grade worked hard planting kale, spinach and parsley. Students planted seeds and revived the growing trays in the 3rd floor deck garden. Students checked in on the many plants they have started over the last few weeks to find that each of their projects are vibrant and bursting with life. We all look forward to the joy of feasting on a delicious salad grown in and harvested from the much loved deck garden.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

PHS' 2nd grade and middle school students teamed up to grow foods on their third floor deck. Garden club was excited to have PHS class of 2014's Katy come by and lead the day's projects. Our urban farmers explored the California natives that call the deck home, harvested tomatoes, and planted greens. It is inspiring to see what our energetic and enthusiastic PHS students can achieve in one short working lunch.

Exploring, Playing and Planting in the Garden

Middle school gardeners welcomed PHS' second grade to the garden for explorations, play and planting. Second graders learned about the California natives like lupin, yerba buena, sticky monkey, ceanothus, coyote bush and California willow. They picked, played with and ate the many herbs that grow in the PHS deck garden. They also planted kale, red chard and lettuce. Students predict that they'll be eating these greens in a salad within six weeks. It was a great way to spend a Thursday lunch.

Happy 2015 - 2016!

Welcome back. We are happy to let you know that we have kicked off the 7th year of the PHS deck garden. This week we mapped out our workdays and planted arugula, lettuce and kale. We are looking forward to lots of great projects and enjoying eating and sharing our crops. Thanks you.

Giving Love and Attention to Our Precious Garden!

We finally found time to tend our beloved garden. We did our chores. We removed vegetable that had gone to seed and replaced them with bok choy and tomatoes. We checked in on our worm-bin and we were glad to see that the worm-bin is thriving. Life should never be too busy to spend time out in the beauty of nature.

Middle School Students Celebrate Pi's Eve by Gardening with PHS' First Grade

It was a wonderfully productive day in PHS' school garden. We were thrilled to welcome first graders to our edible garden. Together we tackled three big projects. The worms received a lovely meal made of food scraps from school lunches. It appears our worms love the snacks we prepare. Our worms grow in number and size. Henry became fond of one special worm and named it "Tickles!" The kale has come to the end of its season. Kale was removed and sent to the green bin. Arugula, cauliflower and beets were planted in the kale's place. Charly taught a team of students how to turn eggs, milk and brioche bread into french toast. This delicious snack was prepared for first graders and other community members found working in the building.  It was a full and rewarding working lunch. Happy Pi Day!

PHS' First Grade Teams Up With Middle School Urban Farmers

Today the PHS middle school team of gardeners welcomed the first graders to the garden. The afternoon work session opened with all of us circling up and greeting one another. We broke into smaller teams to plant, make a garden fresh salad and to prepare eggs fresh from Todd's chicken coop in Marin. First graders were fascinated with Tiger, PHS' California king snake. They observed her intently for the longest time. They also took in the gorgeous view of the city from the deck garden. Before we knew it our time was over and our first grade farmers left with savory snacks to share with their lower school friends. It made for a lovely Friday in the PHS garden.

The 2011-2012 Gardening Season Begins!

Our middle school gardening team has been busy planning their first project of the year. Last week they met during park lunch and decided on what fun things they would do with our first grade. Students thought it was time to amend the soil in our SIP containers and to plant strawberries and greens! This week they welcomed the first graders to the science deck garden. Students taught our first graders how to plant seedlings. Everyone was thrilled to see that our worms were still healthy and happy after the summer break. Please stay tuned for upcoming events and projects!

Another Productive Day With PHS First Grade!

A Wonderful Week for PHS Gardeners

The week was full of activity for all PHS gardeners. Tuesday the planting of tomatoes in topsy turvy containers continued. Hungry gardeners harvested strawberries to feast on as the reward for their labors.

Thursday the 7th and 8th grade students who have been responsible for the design, construction, ongoing maintenance and integration of the garden into school curriculum took the first grade to the Fort Mason community garden. This garden is the longest running community garden in America and the only community garden operating in a National Park. There has been a garden on this site for centuries with Native Americans working this specific piece of land prior to Europeans arriving.

We met with Steve and Dale. They did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome in their garden. We got a tour, did some work planting vegetables on both Dale's and Carole's plots, explored and created artful sketches of the beautiful sights we enjoyed. Finally, under the comforting shade of a heritage tree we sat together to share lunch and plenty of laugher! A truly perfect use of three hours!

Thank you to all the parents who made time to drive us and to share the day with us.

Thank you to Dale and Steve for sharing their passion for and knowledge of gardening with us.

Special thanks to Carole Denola for making the day possible!
