We all got to harvest food to take home to feast on tonight. It was a lot of fun to be able to enjoy the results of our work.

Lunchtime Gardening

Today we planted strawberries and artichokes, watered our growing plants and wrote a letter to the all PHS classes inviting them to make use of the space. We also built a very fancy tool chest to store our garden tools. Our plants are growing healthy and our garden is growing into a beautiful community space to be shared.

Friday Night Garden Party

The evening proved to be the definition of elegant simplicity. It was a magical moment where garden club supporters had the pleasure of sharing enchanting company, delicious foods, excellent music and some down home square dancing.

Thank you to parents, administration, staff and teachers who made time in their busy lives to share in this evening. Thank you for your generous gifts as well!

A great big heart felt thank you to Martin, Namrata, Pascale and Tony! Without their love, support, sweat and muscle this student project would not be possible!

Work day!!!

We have had a very productive day today. We would not have been able to do this without all your help and generous donations of supplies. We planted four big wine barrels with trees and assorted plants. We also used the wall hangers and they look very good. The deck is turning into a real garden very rapidly and it's nice to see the change. All of us in the Garden Club hope that you will continue to help. Thanks.

Lunch Time Construction

Planting trees on a sunny autumn day in San Francisco is really fun when you get to use power tools! The fifteen of us teamed up to begin planting our deck orchard! We used wine barrels for planters. We planted a fig, olive, Myer lemon and grapefruit. We also built a few more SIP containers. Not bad for a 30 minute middle school lunch.

THANK YOU to the generous person who sent us the 4 trowels from Amazon.com!

Dear Garden Supporters,

You'll find The Garden Club wish at http://www.wikipages.com/index.php/User:Greenroofphs. If you would like to lend a specific tool, give an item or contribute a specific plant, go to the previous wikipages link, click edit at the top of the page/text box and type a capital x in front of the item of your choice on the list. Finally, you must click save at the bottom of the text box. The changes are then saved. We all will know that this item is no longer needed. Feel free to put your name after that item if you want, but anonymous support is great!

The items can be delivered to the third floor deck outside the science room. Deliveries are being graciously accepted now through Friday 10/16/09 at the 6-8 PM Garden Party.

Thanks for the encouragement!

SIP Contruction Begins!

The gardening club spent today's lunch wielding power tools. We love power tools! It is mind blowing how fast and fun building containers for our edible roof garden was! We will actually plant cabbage, brochali, radishes and other yummy greens tomorrow!

Planting!!!

Hello, Garden Club minions!

At our meeting today, we decided that we're going to begin planting next week. Yeah! But before we can start, we need a few items. We need five-gallon pickle barrels, one-pound cottage cheese containers, PVC pipes, power drills, and a lock hole saw. If you know where we can get these, please comment and tell us!
We selected our wintergreens we are going to plant. These veggies and plants include the following:

ROOT VEGETABLES: carrots, radishes, beets, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas
GREENS: kale, chard, spinach, mustard greens, collards, Asian greens (bok choy, mizuna), arugula, radicchio, lambsquarters, mesclun lettuces, orach, sorrel, endive
BRASSICAS: brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi
HERBS: oregano, marjoram, basil, cilantro, parsley, chives, fennel, and any perennial herbs
OTHERS: Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes), scallions, leeks, peas, celery, celeriac, bush beans, fava beans, garbanzo beans, oats
FRUITS: There are also some fruits that are harvested in the winter, like apples, pears, persimmons, and citrus fruits. But you'll need to plant them in late fall, winter, or early spring.

We have looked to our neighbors to the north for inspiration! Check out what's happening on the roofs in Montreal at http://www.insideurbangreen.org/rooftop-garden-project---montreal/

This coming Tuesday, 09/22/09, we'll be building SIP containers for planting our wintergreens. Take a look at the source for our design inspiration at http://greenroofgrowers.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-make-two-bucket-sub-irrigated.html

We need tools and materials to include;

power drills
door/keyhole saws
Used 5 gallon plastic buckets
Used 1 pound cottage cheese containers
1-inch PVC pipe
Organic potting soil

The 2011-2012 Gardening Season Begins!

Our middle school gardening team has been busy planning their first project of the year. Last week they met during park lunch and decided on what fun things they would do with our first grade. Students thought it was time to amend the soil in our SIP containers and to plant strawberries and greens! This week they welcomed the first graders to the science deck garden. Students taught our first graders how to plant seedlings. Everyone was thrilled to see that our worms were still healthy and happy after the summer break. Please stay tuned for upcoming events and projects!

Another Productive Day With PHS First Grade!

A Wonderful Week for PHS Gardeners

The week was full of activity for all PHS gardeners. Tuesday the planting of tomatoes in topsy turvy containers continued. Hungry gardeners harvested strawberries to feast on as the reward for their labors.

Thursday the 7th and 8th grade students who have been responsible for the design, construction, ongoing maintenance and integration of the garden into school curriculum took the first grade to the Fort Mason community garden. This garden is the longest running community garden in America and the only community garden operating in a National Park. There has been a garden on this site for centuries with Native Americans working this specific piece of land prior to Europeans arriving.

We met with Steve and Dale. They did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome in their garden. We got a tour, did some work planting vegetables on both Dale's and Carole's plots, explored and created artful sketches of the beautiful sights we enjoyed. Finally, under the comforting shade of a heritage tree we sat together to share lunch and plenty of laugher! A truly perfect use of three hours!

Thank you to all the parents who made time to drive us and to share the day with us.

Thank you to Dale and Steve for sharing their passion for and knowledge of gardening with us.

Special thanks to Carole Denola for making the day possible!
